Our Love Story (part I)
Our Story (PART 1)
Luis and I dated only 3 weeks before we got engaged. It was quick but there is a reason behind it all… (part 1)
2008, I was working at the Fairmont Mayakoba hotel at the Riviera Maya, I was a hostess at the beach restaurant, “Las Brisas”. I used to work at the fine dinning restaurant, an evening shift which was, 3 to 11 pm.
The layout of the Fairmont Mayakoba hotel is different than what a regular hotel would be; main building had reception, rooms, restaurants, lobby, spa, stores, bars, banquet halls, employee cafeteria, transportation station, etc all looking out to the mangrove swamp, not the ocean.
To get to the ocean it is a 5 min ride on a golf cart or a 15 minute walk. There are only 16 beach front hotel rooms, a restaurant and a pool area.
I used to work at the beach restaurant and all employees in that area rarely had interaction with the employees on the main building, It was too far away. (Photos below)
All employees have a 30 minute lunch break and it wasn’t possible for the beach employees to go to the main building for lunch since
just the walking distance to the main building and back would take up all of our lunch break time.
We had our own cafeteria and we all lived in our beautiful ‘beach front bubble’.
While working there, our beach cafeteria went under renovation and for 1 Week, we were sent to the main building.
I was having lunch by myself when I suddenly saw Luis eating with his friends… I don’t know how to describe the feeling but it was like time stopped for 5 seconds and I stared at him probably with my mouth wide open, he seemed physically my perfect type, a voice in my head said “I am going to marry him”. He didn’t see me… I woke up from my “day dreaming for the perfect guy moment”, finished my lunch and went back to work.
The beach cafeteria was remodeled and running again and I didn’t see him again until…
One day around May, I was called to cover a lunch shift, I was working daytime. I saw my boss walking towards the restaurant with a man by his side. Once they got closer to me I recognized this man, it was Luis!! My boss introduced Luis to me and informed me he was the new beach manager… as much as my heart wanted to feel excited, I felt nervous because at that time I had a boyfriend and it was a good relationship, so the truth is that, it wasn’t very exciting. He started working at the beach area but we had different shift schedules, he worked from 6 am to 6 pm.
I learned Luis was dating someone and this person was a hotel employee. I actually felt happy since that meant that none of us were available and I actually was able to be just friends with him without entering in any type of “dangerous zone”.
Eventually he broke up with his girlfriend. I was still in a happy relationship and had no intentions of breaking up but was well aware Luis was a great guy that was worthy of meeting my friends and I decided to introduce him to my all of my girlfriends that had plans in moving from the city to the beach at the end of the year. I’ve always enjoyed matching people up!
Around October, I started to talk about him to my friends, he actually was being paired up long distance with a friend that was going to come live at the Riviera Maya in December 2008, we will call her “Kiki”.
Kiki had plans to attend the Madonna concert in November of 2008 in Mexico city (5 hrs from our home town, Guadalajara). The concert was in a stadium for 87,000 people.
Kiki sat right next to a girl named Pam. Pam turned out to be Luis’ best friend and found out Kiki was going to move to Riviera Maya in a month. Pam met Kiki by her real name, Cassandra, not her nickname; Kiki.
Pam told Luis that she thought Cassandra and him would be great for each other…
When Luis came to talk to me next day, after the Madonna concert, he was super excited talking about Cassandra and how his bff (Pam) wanted him to meet her since she was moving soon to the same place where he lived…
Cassandra is not a common name and is not everyday girls from Guadalajara go to the biggest city in Mexico (Mexico City) for a Madonna concert, so I quickly messaged Kiki and asked her if she had met a girl named Pam, at the concert. She said, YES!
I can’t even explain the shock that this coincidence caused on Luis (and I). It was a super tiny world and the chances of Kiki and Pam sitting together in an 87,000 people stadium were minimum but it happened and Luis took it as a sign. He was beyond excited because he thought it was meant to be, he thought Kiki was going to be his future wife, (even if he said he never wanted to get married) and that the fact that two of his friends wanted to pair him up with Kiki, meant something special. He claimed to be in love without even meeting her in person.
December arrived and Kiki did so as well. My boyfriend at the time was working and living in Cancun and our relationship wasn’t good anymore. We grew apart.
I took Luis to a bar to meet up with Kiki and all of my friends that arrived to Playa del Carmen. Some friends were only on vacation but 5 girls were planning to stay for a few months.
Luis and I made plans to meet in a bar at the 5th Av. in Playa del Carmen where he could finally meet, what he thought, was the love of his life: Kiki.
When we showed up to meet Kiki and all the other friends, she was sitting with a guy, a guy that seemed more than a friend… Luis’ heart was crushed, it was very awkward and uncomfortable. Kiki never mentioned she was with someone.
This bump in the road and not so happy surprise allowed us to hang out and talk at that bar (in a non-working environment), he didn’t really know anyone and his heart and dreams had just been shattered in tiny pieces.
