<<OASIS>>: When I saw my children standing in front of this playground and realized the happiness they were feeling, I thought of an Oasis. I have read about them, they mention them in movies, tv shows, cartoons, books and stories but I’ve never experienced anything like an oasis until this day. When you live in a country where it snows half of the time, suddenly the bright sunny rays of light gifted once in a while give us more than a “pretty day”. It gives us the opportunity to go outside!! If you live in a warm place, this is something you might take for granted but not us. In Airdrie, Alberta (Canada) we have had one of the harshest winters ever and we have been inside for a very long time. Our body craves heat, sun, breathing fresh air without feeling the hairs in your nostrils freeze, walk on the snow, get on a swing, climb and slide and laugh and even make snow angels while still feeling your 10 fingers and 10 toes and without having your butt freeze and maybe your ears fall off. This Mexican body still has a Mexican thermostat and from what I’ve heard, this winter has been brutal. When the sun comes out we do too. Spring came for 2 days and then we are back to our winter wonderland which is beautiful too. Patience: I’ve learned the true meaning of this word. I write this blog from my dining room table that overlooks my deck and yard, on my right side I see that my patio set is covered in snow again but it is my oasis at home, I have an Oasis in front of me everyday but it’s too shy to come out so I have to patiently wait until the rays of light encourage my oasis to shine bright before my eyes and when that happens; a hammock will be hanging in my oasis, my grass will be green, my dog will run around the whole yard, my kids will climb their “tree house” and spend a lot of time soaking the rays of sun on their pale faces. I will sit and drink water, tea, tequila, beer, kamboucha… all of this above sounds dreamy and suddenly I look to my left and I see my beautiful home, my children playing and running around my house, laughing, screaming and having the time of their lives while they play pretend, Luca has a sword built with crayola markers and Camila is a queen with a blanket cape and also has a crayola marker “scepter of light”, I am healthy and so are they, we are warm inside, some days even sun comes through our window, we have everything we need and more and I realize that I don’t have to look out the window and wish for something else than the love and appreciation of Today, one day at a time is all we got and today in Airdrie, we have another wintery day that is peaceful, safe, clean, beautiful and free.
